The intent of this Specification is to help explain the LOD framework and standardize its use so that it becomes more useful as a communication tool. It does not prescribe what Levels of Development are to be reached at what point in a project but leaves the specification of the model progression to the user of this document. To accomplish the document’s intent, its primary objectives are:
• To help teams, including owners, to specify BIM deliverables and to get a clear picture of what will be included in a BIM deliverable
• To help design managers explain to their teams the information and detail that needs to be provided at various points in the design process
• To provide a standard that can be referenced by contracts and BIM execution plans.
It should be noted that this Specification does not replace a project BIM Execution Plan (BIMXP),
AEC (UK) Cad & BIM Standards and Protocols
Version 2.0 of the AEC (UK) BIM Protocol is a unification of the guidance provided by the previous documents, bringing workflows together in a single generic document which can be applied to any BIM-enabled project. The set of documents builds on the guidelines and frameworks defined by the UK standards documents, including BS1192:2007 and the forthcoming PAS1192-2:2012 alongside proven best practice procedures, providing a clear, concise path to implementation for BIM authoring software, such as Autodesk Revit and Bentley’s AECOsim Building Designer.
The AEC (UK) BIM Protocol v2.0 forms the “hub” of a complete software-based solution. Supplementary documents provide additional detail and enhancements required to implement these protocols using specific BIM authoring software:
ANZRS – Australian and New Zealand Revit Standards
The Australian and New Zealand Revit Standards (ANZRS) was an initiative conceived at RTC (Revit Technology Conference) 2009 in Melbourne in response to the Revit user community’s frustration with lack of consistency and quality in Revit families available from Autodesk, Content Creators and other sources.
It’s been a mammoth effort, and not without the contributions of dozens of volunteers, but RTC 2011 marks the first public release of the Australian and New Zealand Revit Standards – for Content Creation and Management.
CanBIM represents, supports and advocates on behalf of the entire AECOO and educational community to build a positive business environment for the effective deployment of BIM, not only for our member firms, but for all engaged in utilizing BIM in Canada.
Our Mission is to provide our professional, educational, construction, fabrication and supply chain members a collective voice dedicated to BIM. We provide our members with advocacy, learning opportunities and best practices for BIM in a Canadian context while maintaining connectivity with our international partners.
The Institute for BIM in Canada (IBC) leads and facilitates the coordinated use of Building Information Modeling (BIM) in the design, construction and management of the Canadian built environment. Its founding partner organizations represent specific industry sectors that have a keen interest in seeing BIM implemented in a way, and at a pace, that enables the primary stakeholders to understand their roles and responsibilities and to assess their capacity to participate in this process. IBC’s priorities include an awareness program, a practice manual, a bibliography of useful resources, and a full environmental scan/assessment on the use of BIM in Canada and internationally.
The Canadian chapter of buildingSMART International has been established to provide the appropriate body and home for Canadian BIM Standards Development through participation in the development of international BIM standards as the voice of the Canadian marketplace and to promote the awareness of buildingSMART International (bSI) within Canada.
Initiated and run by the Institute for BIM in Canada (IBC), both IBC and bSC share the common goal of supporting the implementation of BIM in a way and at a pace that enables industry to successfully achieve improvements in project delivery and lifecycle management of the built environment, including infrastructure.
bSC’s participation provides a Canadian perspective to efforts to realize international standards in support of the goals of interoperability of data, consistency and efficiency in work processes, and optimization of information classification systems.
Canada and Canadian professionals have a long history and reputation of collaboration and communication between countries and regions. This chapter continues to fulfill this role, supporting the development and application of standards from high-level to practical use
NBIMS – US
The National BIM Standard-United States™ (NBIMS-US™) provides consensus based standards through referencing existing standards, documenting information exchanges and delivering best business practices for the entire built environment. With open BIM standards we can build detailed models then deliver accurate products that can be used during commissioning and operation to ensure facility functionality throughout the life of the facility and to deliver high performance, carbon neutral, and net zero energy based facilities.
The National Institute of Building Sciences is a non-profit, non-governmental organization that successfully brings together representatives of government, the professions, industry, labor and consumer interests, and regulatory agencies to focus on the identification and resolution of problems and potential problems that hamper the construction of safe, affordable structures for housing, commerce and industry throughout the United States. Authorized by the U.S. Congress, the Institute provides an authoritative source and a unique opportunity for free and candid discussion among private and public sectors within the built environment. The Institute’s mission to serve the public interest is accomplished by supporting advances in building sciences and technologies for the purpose of improving the performance of our nation’s buildings while reducing waste and conserving energy and resources.
